Finishing Techniques Presentations by Tom Meeker, Jim Blatz, and
Bob Hammond
Christmas Wooden Toy Contest Have you made the perfect wooden toy, or the most fun wooden toy, or the cutest wooden toy? Now is the time to enter it in the HCF Wooden Toy Contest. Bring your homemade toys to the December meeting. Bosch is providing great prizes. Rules are simple: It has to be a toy and it has to be made of wood. No kit toys, please. A change for this year: Bosch will not collect the toys as they have dropped their national competition. So, you can bring your toy for the competition, win a prize, and take your precious handiwork back home with you.
New
Products from Bosch - David Reifsteck
of Bosch will give a presentation on several new products that Bosch recently
introduced. Among these are a line of indestructible cordless drills and a miter
saw with all the controls mounted in the front for ease of use.
Finishing Techniques You are great at joinery, your designs are balanced and pleasing to the eye but somehow the finish never quit works out right? Bob Hammond, Jim Blatz, and Tom Meeker will talk about finishing techniques that may just give your latest project that special something you've been searching for.
Phil Tennant of IUPUI will give a presentation on "Contemporary Studio Furniture and Art Furniture" plus a tour of the shop area at Herron and information about the school. The meeting will be January 15th at 7:00. There is a change in location for this meeting. We will be meeting at the Herron Museum Auditorium. 110 E. 16th Street, Indianapolis. Directions will be in the January newsletter.

Another Woodworking Show Opportunity - The Lil Builders Workshop -
HCF has agreed to supply volunteers to work in the children's woodworking area at the woodworking show in January. This is a great opportunity for the club to teach a new generation of woodworkers and get some free publicity for the club in the process. Plus volunteers get a 3-day pass to woodworker's show.
In addition, Nan Schulte is offering each club member who volunteers for The Lil Builder a custom made T-shirt with the club logo on it. You are required to wear the T-shirt while working the Lil Builders area in order to qualify for the free shirt.
Further information and a sign-up sheet will be available at the December meeting. Please sign up and write your T-shirt size next to your name. Nan will send you your T-shirt by mail the second week of January.

- New Members -
Welcome to Chris Vorhies and Jeff Pratt. We hope you enjoy your time with us.
***
- Video Tape Library -
The videotape library is available at all meetings. This is a free service to members. You are encouraged to make use of this valuable service but please return any tapes you have borrowed. All borrowed tapes are to be returned at the next month's meeting. This will allow others to enjoy this service too.
A complete list of videotape titles is available on our website. A printed catalogue is available for review at each meeting.
Do you have videos that would be useful for the library? . . . . . Let us know.
If you have questions about the video library, contact Bob at 253-8771 or at rbeckerich@iquest.net.

- Meeting Room Costs -
Environmental Management Institute, Inc. rents us their Training Room at the very reasonable cost of $45 a meeting. For this amount, we receive use of the meeting room, their electronic equipment, and the liquid refreshments. They also clean up our coffee cups and lemonade glasses.
To help us pay our rent, we pass the "hat" at each meeting. Please, donate to help the club offset the cost of our excellent meeting facility.

- Program Committee -
Members of the Program Committee, please briefly meet after the December meeting for 5 - 10 minutes at the back of the meeting room with Don Melloy, chairmen.
The next Program Committee Meeting is January 8, 2003 at 7:00 at Gibraltar Design conference room. 9102 N. Meridian Street, Ste 300, Indianapolis. Thank you to Don Claffey for arranging for a meeting place.
Members of Program Committee: Joe Brickler, Don Claffey, Dick Ellis, Glenn Jable, Harold Matthews, Tom Meeker, Don Melloy, Joe Miller, Clet Meyers, Joe Schmidlin, Nan Schulte, and Chuck Stouse.
Do you have an idea for a club program or know a person who would be a good speaker, please contact one of the committee members.
Results from the Program Committee Survey: 18 members turned in their surveys. Apparently, sending them out in the newsletter wasn't the best way to gather input from the membership. Thank you to those that took the time to give us your input. To those of you that didn't, you will get a second chance at the December meeting when surveys will be handed out and you will be asked to turn them in at the end of the meeting. Your input is important. This is your club and we need to know what you want. This is your chance for input on the very important topic of what we schedule for our meetings. Please take the time to consider this and come prepared to fill out a survey.

- Executive Committee Meeting
The next meeting is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on December 19, 2002 at Tom Meekers' house.

- Messages from the Executive Committee -
Making opportunities available, whether informational or purchasing, to our membership is one of the goals of your Executive Committee. To facilitate us doing this within the agenda of our monthly meetings, please contact the President, Lew Lundberg, or the Vice-President, Don Melloy, at least one week in advance of the meeting to make arrangements. Thank you.
The sign in sheet is passed at each meeting. Please take the time to sign in. This is very important to guide your Executive and Program Committees on what types of programs draw large or small crowds. It helps us to plan to serve you better. Please do your part to help us with this and sign the attendance sheet. Thank you.

- Minutes from November 20, 2002 Forum meeting
Meeting presided over by Lew Lundberg, President.
Members in Attendance: 40
Member News: Dave Houston had surgery on his foot and will be coming home soon.
Video Library Bob Beckerich
Bob had warned you last month to bring your tapes back that were overdue or be listed in the December newsletter. Don Claffey (2 videos checked out in August) and Bill Logan (3 videos checked out in August) please do the archeological dig necessary to locate these videos. Thank you.
Toy Project Darrell McConnell
Our count for this year will be between 1,500 and 1,800 toys. The toys will be packed on December 7 at Automatic Pool Covers in Fishers. They will be delivered December 9, 10, and 11. A sign up sheet was passed around for volunteers to help pack and to deliver.
Program Committee Don Melloy
Don asked if there was interest in doing a meeting at a door manufacturing company in Shirley, Indiana about 20 miles east of Indianapolis. A show of hands was favorable for traveling there for a meeting. The program committee will follow up and arrange for this to occur in the spring.
The December meeting will be the Bosch toy contest, and a member panel discussion on finishing. Tom Meeker is still looking for one or two volunteers to round out the panel. Nan Schulte offered homemade brownies to anyone that volunteered to serve on the panel. Nan was a professional baker in a previous career.
Secretarys Report Nan Schulte filled in for Bob Taylor with a report on the Newsletter. If you have a problem with the e-mail version of the newsletter, please let Nan know and she will switch you to a paper copy. Also. Please keep the club updated on address changes both home and e-mail so you don't miss your monthly newsletter.
Website News - Lew Lundberg
250 hits on our website so far. Comment from the floor that the Toy Project Section needs updating on the website. This will be addressed after the upcoming toy distribution.
We have purchased several new videos from Marc Adams School of Woodworking. They will be available to be checked out at the December meeting.
New Feature: Raffle of $10 gift certificate from Rocklers at each meeting. $1 per ticket. One gift certificate drawn for each $20 collected. The raffle was won by one of our visitors. Congratulations and happy buying.
Christmas Gift and Hobby Show Results Bob Shaw
The show went very well for us. We had at least one person manning our booth in every time slot so we were completely covered. 39 people signed up as interested in more information about our club. Bob will be following up with them to invite them to our next meeting.
Bob announced for Bill Stillman, who could not make it to the meeting this month, about the Woodworkers Show in January and the HCF booth there. We will have booth that is two tables wide. A sign up sheet for manning the booth will be circulated at the December meeting.
New Business - Lew Lundberg
We are developing a file on how we do at the shows like the Gift and Hobby and The Woodworkers Show. This will help us to learn what is good and not so good to do and help us improve our presence at these shows.
Speaker - Tim Tucker, past president of the Indiana Chapter of the American Society of Home Inspectors.
Tim was joined by Steve Surette, current president of Indiana Chapter of ASHI.
After an explanation of what ASHI is and its code of ethics, Tim informed us that only 55 of the ~300 inspectors in Indiana have passed qualification to be a full member in ASHI. Another 40 are provisional members working on attaining full membership.
Tim covered aspects of home inspection and what the consumer can expect for their money. The most common problem cited by an inspector is poor grading. Questions were encouraged during the course of the presentation.
Tim ended with a photograph quiz of Name that problem. These were actual photos of problems he had seen during an inspection. HCF members did pretty well at figuring out many of the problems in the photos. The most memorable picture was of mold growth on the ceiling of a room where it looked like large black dots had been painted onto the ceiling. Do you want to live in that home?
The meeting ended with a sale to members of router bits and saw blades.
