Bob
Havlen is a retired telephone lineman who lives in Morristown. While he was
waiting on a line for a call-back from the office, the property owner handed
him a piece of bass wood and told him it was good for carving. Bob whittled
the first thing he could think of, a small indian totem poll. He gave the
carving to his grandaughter, who showed it to her friends and got requests
for ten more. With a little experience under his belt, he carved a duck that
was the winning entry in a carving contest. That hooked him and, today, he
says he'd power carve all day if his wife would let him.
For
our June meeting, Bob brought along some display pieces, some work in progress,
and a small demonstration project, a caterpillar like the one shown below.
