Presentation on Stihl Tools by Craig Walker.

Demonstration of Chain Saw Carving by Art Roberts.

Weather permitting, this meeting will be held outside.

Please bring a lawn chair for your comfort.

Stihl Inc. is one of seven manufacturing facilities in the Stihl Group.  The chain saw is the cornerstone of its industry, but today they also manufacture a variety of power tools, both electric and gasoline.  Some of their other products include augers and drills, blowers, construction tools, and hand tools

Craig Walker, who represents Stihl Chain Saws for Bryan Equipment of Cincinnati, will be presenting a program on the safe use of a chain saw, aspects of chain saw carving, and lumber making with a chain saw.  He will have examples of many of Stihl’s products along for inspection.  Craig is also a chain saw carver.

Art Roberts is a master chain saw carver.  Art will be demonstrating many of the fine points in Craig’s presentation.  In the course of his demonstration for us, he will complete a sculpture so that we can see the whole process from featureless wood to carved eagle.

- Special Inventory Reduction Sale at our August Meeting –

HCF is running out of storage space.

At the August meeting, lumber and sandpaper will be made available to members.  The lumber is scrap of 5/8 inch Baltic Birch plywood that is donated to us.  This is the lumber that we build many of our Christmas Toy Projects out of.  The club’s policy is that excess of this material will be made available to members.  A donation in support of HCF’s Christmas Toy Project in exchange for your armful of lumber and sandpaper is requested but not required.  Please give all donations to Tom Meeker, club treasurer.

Policy for Lumber Donated for HCF Christmas Toy Project.

– Passed by the membership on October 16, 2002.

Lumber donated to the club is intended for use in the Christmas Toy Project unless specifically stated as being received for another purpose.  It may be used either in the group shops making toys or by individual members working in their private shops on projects for the Toy effort.

Lumber may be made available to the membership for personal use when capacity for storage is exceeded.  This can occur up to three times a year at the discretion of the Group Toy Shop Leaders or the Executive Committee.  When made available to members, a voluntary donation from those receiving lumber is encouraged but not required.  Any money collected in this manner will be turned over to the club Treasurer for exclusive use in Toy Project related expenses.

- Vice-President Candidate –

Dave Gootee’s nomination to be Vice-President of Home Craftsmen Forum will be put before the general membership at our August meeting.  Here is an introduction to Dave, in his own words.

“I was raised in Indy on the eastside in Irvington and attended Scecina high school. I attended Purdue University where I received my undergraduate in engineering and masters in business degrees.

My wife Sandy and I have been married for 36 years and we have six kids and eight grandkids (so far!!). We all still live in Indy and are a close-knit group.

I retired from Eli Lilly and Co. after 34 years of serving in various management positions in marketing, finance, planning, and international operations.

I am currently working as the chief financial officer of the Stone Belt agency located in Bloomington In. Stone Belt is a not-for-profit provider of a wide range of services to people with developmental disabilities.

I have been interested in woodworking for about 10 years and really enjoy learning and improving my skills. Lately, I find myself building a lot of Arts and Crafts style pieces, which I really enjoy.

I have been a member of the Forum only since April of this year. I am really impressed with the attendance at our monthly meeting and the quality of the programs offered. I would like to help the organization grow and continue to develop in any way I can. It is clear the this is an organization the loves what they do and do it very well.”

The club will be participating in the WoodWorks Show this October 10-12.  We will have a booth that will need members to work.  Also member can sign up to work at WoodWorks Make-A-Memory Workshop, a special area, staffed by experienced woodworkers from local guilds and clubs.  Under their watchful supervision, children and their parents or grandparents make a scrollsaw project together.  The projects vary, but dinosaurs and flowers and peace symbols are perennial favorites.  Club member who work at the booth or volunteer at the Make-A-Memory Workshop will receive a pass good for the whole weekend to attend the WoodWorks Show.  There will be a sign up sheet at the August meeting.  We have a limited number of slots so please let Tom Meeker know as soon as possible if you want to work at the show.  For more information check out their web site at http://woodworks2003.com/.

The show is asking woodworkers to bring projects to the SawDust Cafe to be judged.  There will likely be some gift certificates and tools awarded as prizes.  At present I don't know the details on how to enter a project, but you should start thinking about what you can enter. - Tom

-Christmas Toy Project Report – Darryll McConnell

All Toy Shops are running strong right now.

We have fifteen members that have taken on box projects (a lot of toys that they are making in their home shops).  Please remember that your box projects are due back to the Toy Project Committee by November.  Thanks for your help in making our Toy Project a success.

- Webmaster needed –

Our webmaster, John Lundberg, is leaving us.  Something about moving out of state to a better life.  As such, the club needs a new webmaster.  Please contact Nan Schulte, HCF secretary- elect, if you are interested in this position.

Details of job:  the website is fully functional – though improvements are welcome.  The webmaster has to update the website each month by posting the current newsletter and any other documentation submitted by the Executive Committee.  This is a low time commitment position in the club but is vital to the club (especially for those of us that keep misplacing our copies of the newsletter and have to look up on the internet each month where the program is and what it is.)
