The program for the evening is the picnic, meeting recipients of our Christmas Toy Project handiwork, viewing a display of toys that club members have made for the Christmas Toy Project, socializing, viewing a display of winning projects from the club’s Project Focus 2003 intra-club woodworking competition, and the major event is the club presentation to our first recipients of the HCF Awards Program.

 - Shop Made 4-jaw Chuck – by Tim Hanson –

At the April “Jigs and Methods of Work” program, Tim Hanson showed his shop made 4-jaw chuck.  It requires 4 eye screws that are 5 inches long.  Tim has sent a note to the Executive Committee from his summer residence in Wisconsin about the eye screws.

“At the “show and tell meeting” I showed a 4 jaw chuck which was shop made.  I requires 4 “eye screws” which are not easy to find in Indianapolis.  I am spending the summer up here in Northern Wisconsin adn at the local hardware story they stock those eye screws.  If any member wants 4 of those eye screws, I will gladly sent them if they contact me.  They cost 60 cents a piece and the mailing would probably be a dollar.  See you all in the fall!  - - Respectfully,

Tim Hanson

Donation to the Club – Dale Lechlitner

Dale donated a teak gavel to the club to be used to bring the meeting to order.  The teak wood came from the Merchant Ship INDIANA.  Dale made the gavel and will supply the club with a history of the wood for our records.  Thank you, Dale.

Program:  Decorative Boxes by Band and Scroll Saw with Richard Ellis.

Dick Ellis started making small decorative boxes when he joined Home Craftsmen Forum and got involved with the Christmas Toy Project.  He has since made 1000s of boxes.

Dick did an excellent presentation with many pass around examples of how to make a small wooden box.

A hand out was given out that covered the basic steps in making a box plus a few of Dick’s favorite patterns.

Some of Dick’s tips were:

Wrap the wood with 3 – 4 layers of packing tape before cutting it out will keep the wood from burning as you cut.

Use a blade lubricant.

Drill the hole for the peg hinge first while the wood is in an easy shape to handle on the drill press.

Dick added two of his special boxes to our door prize drawing that night.  Two meeting attendees got to take home a bit of extra inspiration to try making boxes.
