Program:   Wood Carving Techniques with Dennis Maddox.

Dennis Maddox is a Master Woodcarver.  He will be demonstrating wood carving techniques, caring for your carving tools, what carving tools to use for which project, and how to sharpening your tools.  Bring your questions and an open mind to see how carving can compliment your woodworking skills.  Carving can be an end onto itself or an embellishment that takes a simple piece of wood and transforms it into much more.

Dennis received his formal artistic training from the John Herron School of Fine Art.  He is a professional sculpture working in the medium of wood; as such he refers to himself as a WoodCarver.  (Logo above is from his workshop.)  His workshop is located Northeast of Indianapolis in Hamilton County and is equipped with antique chisels and lined with a selection of fine woods.  In his workshop you will find examples of statuary, architectural items, and cabinetry.  Dennis’ commission work can be found in residential and businesses throughout the USA.  He has created such unique pieces as full-scale carousel horses, life size Indians, and totem poles.  He has custom carved and sculpted mantels and newel posts, exterior doors, and interior doors.  Dennis is proficient in design and/or duplication of vintage woodcarvings, such as Corbels, referred to as Fancy Carvings.

In addition to his professional carving work, Dennis shares his love of carving through teaching classes at various venues.

- Club Election of Officers is Coming - - MAY meeting –

A short editorial from your newsletter editor:

Dear Fellow HCF Members,

Our club is at a crossroads.  We need you to get involved to keep us growing.  Bringing the membership bigger and better programming and learning experiences and wood based social interactions doesn’t just magically happen.  I wish it did because then I wouldn’t get so tired out.  We have started along a great new path for our club.  The trips, programming, and new events of the last year are a real testament to a creative push by our outgoing Officers.  We need to keep this force going.  Please join me in moving us forward.  I plan to run for Secretary and bring the same energy to that office as I have brought to the position of Newsletter editor.  What will you do?

- Nan Schulte

HCF Newsletter Editor

The Nomination Committee is headed by Dick Brown.  Please contact him to express your wish to run or to nominate a fellow member.

And start getting those projects together that you want to enter.  The competition is at the May meeting.

- Christmas Toy Project –

We are now gearing up for our 2003 Christmas Toy Project.  Darrell McConnell will again be leading our club in this effort.  The Toy Committee needs your help.  Please look through your patterns and files and plans for possible toys we can produce this year.  If you can make a prototype of the toy for others to see and build, that is even better.

Toy Committee members:  Darrell McConnell, Bob Shaw, and Nan Schulte.

Saturday Hands-On Experiences – Opportunities for more in-depth learning than the 2 hours of our Wednesday night meetings.  One will be in March at Marc Adams School of Woodworking.  Another will be this fall at American Sycamore Woodworkers Retreat.

HCF Project Focus 2003 – Our annual club competition for member-made projects.  Judging will be at our May meeting.  Prizes are awarded in six categories:  Inlayed Item (intarsia or marquetry), Furniture, Scroll Saw Projects, Toys, Turnings, and Misc.  Rules are:  Members may enter as many categories as they wish.  Projects must be built after June 1, 2002.  Builder must be a member of the club.

- Executive Committee Meeting –

The Executive Committee met on March 3, 2003 at Tom Meeker’s house.

Rental Storage access policy was created so that knowledge of who has the keys for access is known to the general membership.

Asset List to be created.  If you are storing an item that belongs to the club, please let an officer know.  This includes wheel cutters, lumber, tools, signs, pictures, tables, toys, etc.  The club is creating an asset list to be kept by the Secretary.  With the passing of time and officer changes, the knowledge of who has what is easily lost.  The asset list will be updated yearly by the Secretary to address this.  PLEASE HELP AND GET YOUR INFORMATION TO AN OFFICER IN MARCH FOR WHAT CLUB ITEMS YOU ARE FAITHFULLY MAINTAINING.  – Thank you.

The next meeting is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on March 26, 2003.  Location to be determined.
