Dale Barnard presented on Arts and Crafts Furniture.
Dale is professional cabinet maker working predominately in the Greene & Greene style. Examples of his work can be seen on his website, listed on our links page.
Dale
began in woodworking at the age of 11 (1961) nailing floors into closets in his
father’s business. He started his
own business in 1984 and currently has one employee.
They work in a 30 x 60 two story building in the woods in Paoli, Indiana.
Dale
will be featured at the Modern Masters program on HG TV on November 9th. He makes a leaded glass door in the Green & Greene style
on the show.
Dale’
s presentation covered the history of the Arts and Crafts movement from its
origins in England to its move and growing popularity and diversity in the USA. He explained how the Arts and Crafts movement (A&C)
started as a response to the verticality and formalness and mass production of
the Victorian style. A&C
emphasized horizontals and being tied to the earth in the home designs.
In furniture designs, it emphasized simple beauty and being built to last
a life time.
A&C
has its own internal debate in Art versus Craft.
Dale touched on the distinctions people make on objects as to whether
they are ART or CRAFT. A consensus
has not been reached on a definition.
Dale
talked about many of the major names in the A&C movement and their styles: Stickley, Ellis, Roycroft, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Charles
& Henry Greene. His love for
Greene & Greene was readily evident in his enthusiasm in talking about their
work.
Dale
brought several furniture pieces to show and also a set of demonstration pieces
of wood that showed the effect of fuming on quarter sawn oak.
Dale
gave an enthusiastic and informative presentation.
He invited anyone with woodworking questions to contact him. His e-mail address is dbcabinetmaker@juno.com.
He can be reached by phone at 812-723-3461.
Or by mail at 1714 E. Owl Hollow Road, Paoli, Indiana, 47454.
Dale
finished out his presentation with one-on-one discussions and members perusing
the many reference books that he brought.
